Zoe Brand - Mechanical Engineer

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what you do now?

I am Masters student in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University studying propulsion. I am currently at Zucrow Labs researching Rotating Detonation Rocket Engines.

How did you become interested in STEM?

My mom got me interested in the STEM field at a young age through coding and art camps!

What advice would you give young girls who are interested in pursuing a career in STEM?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. No question is a stupid question.

What is one piece of advice you wish you had received when you were just starting out?

Follow your gut feeling and find the people in your life that encourage you to keep going and try new things.

How do you handle failure or setbacks in your work?

I acknowledge the things that I have done right and focus on learning from the mistakes to keep moving forward.

How can parents and educators encourage girls to explore STEM subjects from a young age?

Find STEM-related groups and camps!

What skills do you think are most important for success in STEM fields?

Communication and creative thinking.

How has your field changed since you first started your career?

I feel like there have been more communities and fellowships that have sprung up to support women and minorities in STEM fields. The community has become a lot more inclusive and aware!
